According to the U.S. Census, as of July 1, 2007, the DFW area was the fastest growing metropolitan area in the country. The growth rate has been caused by the large number of people and families moving to the area for employment, while the economic activity created and sustained by businesses serving the needs of these incoming people has created a continued healthy DFW job market compared to many other metropolitan areas in the country.
As of November 2009, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the United States was 10 percent, while in Texas at that time the rate remained at 8 percent. This means even at that time, Texas was faring 2 percent better than most states (though it did not boast the lowest unemployment rate in the country). As economic recovery has slowly progressed in some areas of the United States, the DFW area continues to do well. In May 2011, metropolitan areas across the country reported their over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment, with DFW leading the way.
